Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation is available for patients of most ages, and candidates need to be obtain medical clearance to undergo general anesthesia. However, a patient does need to be fully developed before this surgery can be performed.

Chin Implants

One method Dr. Zuckerman may employ to help you offset a recessed chin is to place place a silicone implant through a small incision under the chin or inside the mouth. Dr. Zuckerman then positions the implant in front of the jawbone. This procedure can typically be completed in one hour or less.

Osteo Genioplasty

Dr. Zuckerman also performs osteo genioplasty, or sliding genioplasty, surgery, which corrects a recessed chin without using an implant. In this procedure, Dr. Zuckerman cuts a piece of bone from the lower border of the mandible, also known as osteotomy, and advances it forward to increase the projection of the chin. This technique can also be used in reverse for chin reduction surgery.

Patients who undergo either of these technique are typically highly satisfied with their results. However, osteo genioplasty eliminates the possibility of the chin implant moving and in Dr. Zuckerman’s opinion, is the better procedure. However, he is happy to perform either procedure and will discuss which one may be right for you at your initial cosmetic surgery consultation.

Recovery time will vary depending on which augmentation technique Dr. Zuckerman employs for your procedure but generally involve only a few days of downtime. Dr. Zuckerman may recommend up to two to four weeks before strenuous activity may be fully resumed.
